Mission Statement Our Mission it to create awareness and opportunities for the employment of persons with disabilities through a collaboration of public and private employers and community –based organizations. Objective The primary objective of the Committee is to promote and bring about the employment of persons with disabilities in the public and private sectors. About The Committee is a collaboration of employers and community organizations in the San Francisco area who are dedicated to promoting and creating opportunities for the employment of people with disabilities. Our members represent business and public employers, government, community based organizations, and people with disabilities. We meet regularly to plan and conduct activities that will further our objective. Recent activities include employer-job seeker networking events and employer recognition programs.
History The San Francisco Mayor’s Committee was first established in the early 1950’s. It was the local extension of the President’s Committee for Employment of Persons with Disabilities, which was created in 1947 under President Harry Truman to address the issue of disabled veterans who returned from World War II only to find themselves discriminated against and unable to find work. Governor’s Committees were state extensions of the President’s Committee which in turn spawned local mayor’s committees thus completing a national voluntary network. Local committees are comprised of people who meet to discuss how best to serve the employment needs of disabled persons in their particular locales, and then coordinate specific activities to help meet those goals.
For many years the San Francisco Mayor’s Committee received generous support and guidance from the California Governor’s Committee on Employment of People with Disabilities. We function independently, but share with the Governor’s Committee the belief that employer-agency collaborations provide a unique forum for considering the needs and concerns of everyone involved in the employment of people with disabilities. To create awareness of the employment potential of people with disabilities and to create opportunities for employment, the San Francisco Mayor’s Committee for Employment of Persons with Disabilities champions at least one event every year. |
